Hermitage of Solitude

Hermitage of Solitude

14th-15th century hermitage with three naves and wooden coffered ceiling.

This hermitage, which was formerly called San Mateo, is one of the oldest in Puertollano. It is a hermitage with three naves and a wooden coffered ceiling. In the last renovation of the façade, a side doorway appeared with a cross in the central voussoir of the arch. The current layout of the chapel is the opposite of how it was a few decades ago and originally: The altar was at the foot of the chapel and the altar was at the foot of the chapel and was the place where people passed through. It was accessed from Soledad street, entering through a square courtyard and from there you went into the hermitage. It is the hermitage that was closest to the old part of the town. Nowadays, inside, the lintel of the old entrance door has been brought to light, which was next to the chapel of the Virgen de la Soledad, and to which the Visitors of the Calatrava Order refer.
