Casa de Baños

Casa de Baños

Former medicinal sour water spa, nowadays Puertollano's Citizen's Advice Bureau and Tourist Office.

For several centuries people have been coming to Puertollano to "take" its waters, both for drinking and bathing. But it was not until the arrival of General Narváez, President of the Council of Minister of Queen Isabel II, that this building was built for bathing. Thanks to the general, the road from Ciudad Real to Puertollano was also repaired and the botanical garden around the spa was created, which was to be the seed of the Paseo de San Gregorio. The Casa de Baños has two floors: The ground floor housed the communal baths, one for men and one for women and the individual baths. Here was the hall, the changing rooms and some offices. Upstairs there was a lounge for the enjoyment of the bathers where they could relax and read the press. The bathing season was from June to September. The spa had problems since its opening, leaks, fires, poor maintenance, and so it declined until it ceased to function in the 10-20s of the 20th century. From then on, the building was used as a police station, a rehearsal room for the music band, etc. The building is currently used as the Citizens' Advice Bureau (OAC) and the Tourist Office.
